It is the only preserved of many so-called clumps, i.e. forested islands on the Vistula near Toruń existing before the regulation of the river in the 19th century. The name is known since the Middle Ages and probably comes from the merchants stopping here. In 1411 it contained the first peace of Toruń. In modern times, the island was densely built-up, it was inhabited by landers - craftsmen who carried out their profession illegally, except for guilds. From the 19th century, it gradually began to overgrow with riparian forest. In the interwar period a water sports center was built here. There is a viewpoint overlooking the panorama of Toruń's Old Town complex. Part of the island has been separated since 1987 as a 32.4 ha forest nature reserve. The natural environment in the form of a rare willow and poplar riparian forest is protected. He is one of the tourist attractions of Toruń.
