The museum was founded in 1959 as the Ethnographic Museum in Toruń, since 1999 it is named after Maria Znamierowska-Prüfferowa. The facility was entered into the State Register of Museums in 2005. The main purpose of the activity is to document the history of folk culture in Kujawy, Pałuki, Kashubia and Chełmno land. The museum has been the seat of the former Artillery Arsenal from 1824, which was one of the elements of the Toruń fortress, since its inception. At present, it houses the permanent exhibition "Secrets of everyday life. Folk culture and its borderland from Kujawy to the Baltic Sea (1850-1950) ”, which was made available to visitors at the beginning of 2010. It presents the everyday life of the inhabitants of several ethnographic regions, among others: Kujawy, Pałuk, Kaszuby, and Chełmno land. Apart from historic objects, the exhibition includes various multimedia devices presenting archival films, sounds and presentations. Temporary exhibitions are also organized in the Arsenal. In 2012, the museum's collection has over 60,000 objects from all over Poland. The museum collects collections and documentary materials in the field of ethnography and ethnology and related fields, concerning: - traditional and folk cultures of Polish ethnographic regions, - ethnic and religious minority cultures coexisting with Polish culture in the historical and current borders of the country, - Polish minority cultures abroad, - popular cultures and folk type in Poland. The Ethnographic Museum in Toruń is an organizer not only of exhibitions but also of events promoting broadly understood folk culture and cultural ethnology / anthropology. The collections cover all areas of life and are grouped into the following departments: Basic Economy and Craft, Architecture and Ethnographic Parks, Fisheries and Water Activities, Rural History and Sociology, Folk Art and Aesthetics, Folklore. The Department of Fisheries and Water Activities is separated due to the history of the Museum, because this collection was personally created by prof. Maria Znamierowska-Prüfferow. Next to the museum is the Ethnographic Park (open-air museum) with an area of 1.7 ha, presenting rural buildings from: Kujawy, Chełmno, Dobrzyń, Bory Tucholskie, Kociewia, and Kashubia. The facilities located in it are: cottages, water mill, windmill, outbuildings, small architecture, as well as a lapidarium. The Toruń open-air museum is the only exhibition of this type in the very center of the city.
