There is no doubt that Mikołaj Kopernik was born in Toruń. It is much more difficult to determine exactly in which house, because the rich Copernicus family, allied with the most important patrician families in the city, at that time had several properties including tenement house on św. Anny (today ul. Kopernika 15) and in the most representative part of the city, at the Old Town Square 36 (in the vicinity of the Tenement House under the Star). In the second of the described houses, rebuilt many times and digested by fires, no elements from the 15th and 16th centuries have survived. Whereas the first of the tenements - characteristic for the Hanseatic cities, the so-called house-composition - has survived since the Middle Ages in little changed. Its walls, layout and decorations reflect the history of the city and its inhabitants, trade and artistic contacts of Toruń, as well as changes in mentality, tastes and way of life of Toruń inhabitants, and original interiors and furnishings allow us to move into the Copernicus era and get to know the everyday life of a wealthy middle-class family. The magnificent, richly decorated front facade dates back to the 1920s. Until the end of the 15th century, there was a lintel in front of the house, whose traces can be seen on the southern wall of the basement. During the conservation works carried out at the end of 1972, the nineteenth-century partition walls were demolished and the building was restored to its former layout. This allowed not only to display the preserved interior design of individual interiors, but also to show their original function. In the past, he belonged to the Cracow merchant Mikołaj Kopernik, who came to Toruń around 1456 and married here with Barbara Watzenrode from the patrician family, thus entering the elite of our city. Currently, the building houses a branch of the District Museum in Toruń.
