The medieval city walls in Grudziądz were built in the 14th-15th century. The system of fortifications composed of defensive walls and a moat, is connected in the north-west part with the previously erected fortifications of the Teutonic castle. It is assumed that the first sections of Gothic brick walls were built at the beginning of the 14th century. Even in the Middle Ages they were raised and modified several times. They consisted mostly of a double line of walls with 4 defensive gates - Toruńska at today's ul. Klasztorna from the south Łasińska at ul. Stara Street from the north, Wodna Street Spichrzowa in the south-west corner and Boczna at ul. Mickiewicza from the east (leading to urban meadows and pastures). In addition, there was the Castle Gate, connecting both defensive organisms. Already in the fourteenth century, a single wall on the edge of the escarpment from the Vistula was gradually replaced by a line of defensive multi-storey granaries. 10 defensive towers were erected within the walls (one of them was octagonal). In 1552, the Trynek canal was dug, whose waters fed the moat and powered two mills. In the 17th century, additional earth fortifications were built in front of the Side Gate, while the medieval walls were reinforced in many places with slopes. In the second half of the nineteenth century, due to the dynamic development of the city, most of the fortifications were demolished and the moats were filled in, marking out ul. Groblowa and Małogroblowa. The rebuilt Water Gate has survived to this day. The lower part with the ogival former passage dates back to the 14th century. The upper part was rebuilt for residential purposes after being burned during the siege of the city in 1659. The gate was badly damaged in 1945, and then rebuilt in 1953-1955. Survived best south-east a section of double walls, between the outlets of ul. Monastic and School. Next to the Evangelical church, large fragments of the defensive corner tower have survived, in which in the eighteenth century there was a detention center. Along this section of the walls there is a walking path in the former moat, created as a result of sealing the Trynka River at the end of the 20th century. A plastered water tower was built on the inner wall in the 16th century. A lot of relics are also found in the facades and in the immediate vicinity of the 18th-century former Benedictine monastery about the unlawful lowering of fortifications by nuns, there were sharp conflicts with the city - and in the walls of nineteenth-century tenement houses at ul. Bricks. In the yard of the house at ul. Mickiewicz's relics of the bridge at the Side Gate are visible. Significant sections of the corner of the common walls separating the castle from the city at ul. Tkacka and Zamkowa.
